I admit the “don’t be evil” slogan was very effective on me. I fell for it, but never again.

I’ve known a fair amount too and they always over leveraged themselves. As soon as they had enough for another down payment they would purchase another property. It could have been a different strategy or situation than the landlords you know. To the landlords I knew having aapartment vacant for two months was a serious financial issue.
Most are absolutely living month to month, not out of necessity, out of greed. Most have taken out many mortgages and are just passing the monthly rent from tenant to bank. Why pay off a property when you can just use that money as a down payment for a new property?
Capitalism is a zero sum game, for one to gain wealth it must be extracted from another
This is just not true. There are plenty of valid criticisms of capitalism, there’s no need to use false statements.

31·2 months agoThis graph makes sense when you consider the main cost of these goods/services. The ones that have raised in price are very labor dependent and human labor is expensive (as it should be). The ones that got cheaper are items whose manufacturing can include a lot of automation. What this graph shows is that human labor is expensive. That is obviously not the only factor, but I feel it is a good explanation for the trends shown.
Started on Jeroba, but Thunder just felt more intuitive.
Could you elaborate? My understanding of anarchism is the goal of eliminating government. That won’t eliminate an economic system that originated organically.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•What is the result of a programmer's work?
13·5 months agoRobotics (or more broadly mechatronics) is a super interesting field. To do the work at the mechanical/electrical interface is really hard.
The field of industrial controls skips the hard part and just buys stuff that is pre-designed to move. Then those pre-designed pieces are made to fit and work together. It’s like complicated Legos and is honestly very fun and rewarding.
If you want to do programming with a physical result, controls engineering is a great option. I would recommend shooting for the hard stuff (real programming - DSP, FPGA, etc) knowing you’ve got a safe fallback with industrial controls (PLC programming).

1·5 months agoI don’t think so. The main reason Facebook is so bad is it’s engagement algorithm. It is designed to maximize user engagement to sell adds, and it does that by putting outrage inspiring posts in front of users so that they have an emotional response and stay engaged. Using a human voting system instead of an outrage algorithm to determine what content people is exactly why I enjoy this platform over the other social media platforms.
Is there still rage bait here? Of course! Is it systematically shoved down your throat? No.

4·5 months agoI believe there is existing precedent from SCOTUS that official government Twitter accounts were not allowed to block citizens accounts due to it being a ‘public square’. So that was a govt official taking the action of silencing someone’s ability to respond to them on social media protected by 1A. If the PLATFORM had blocked that user it would have been perfectly valid, since the GOVT did not silence a citizen’s speech.
I believe having the govt run the instance would make the entire forum subject to 1A in a way current social media is not. Would love a constitutional scholar to chime in, but that’s my argument.

3·5 months agoI also don’t get the impression there is a large bot presence here today. I do think if the platform was used as a normal communication network between constituient and representative it would probably become a target for foreign and domestic bots.
Haha yes, I did mean causal.
I think it’s a casual argument. People are saying pitbulls are not inherently more violent, they just tend to be the dog of choice for people who want violent (guard) dogs. They are then taught violent behaviors by their owners.

Yup! They can pay less too. They could pay nothing! Or they could not have this agreement at all. Lots of possibilities.
Seems pretty beneficial to everyone. EU gets more money to accomplish EU objectives at almost no cost. Swissy benefits from market access with less barriers. What is the actual value to each institution? That’s a tough question. What they found is a value that works for both.
