Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the weirdest thing you're upset about?
11·9 months agoOn tinder, I can’t fucking stand seeing pictures of people’s kids. Like, if I’m swiping, and I come across a woman with pictures of her kids? Hell no. Automatic left swipe.
I know that that picture has probably been logged on a dozen servers, it’s been scrapped for AI training, and someone is already falsifying videos with her kid’s face before she gets a first date. And I get she might not know that. But I kinda can’t help feeling like a responsible person would think about these things and try to learn about them.
Also, I’m pissed that it’s happening at all, and people who have no idea it’s happening get caught in the crossfire. Their kids will grow up in a world where generative AI can perfectly replicate them online, where intelligence agencies have cross referenced data on their every movement and formative event from their childhood. And their parents unwittingly made that easier instead of trying to protect them.
That drives me up the wall.

17·9 months agoI’ve read the series, and it’s not. The characters struggle with the (often nonsensical) established caste system and their role in it, and it’s intended as a mirror to real world caste systems and racial divisions rather than as a celebration of them.
Edit: from what I remember. It’s been a year or two since I read the Stormlight archives.

Fun story. Once upon a time, my dad challenged me to find a single wrong thing that God did in the Bible. I pointed out that there are two versions of the Jericho story- the one that they teach in Sunday school, that has a bunch of Hebrews killing everyone, and the one that they don’t teach in Sunday school, where a bunch of Hebrews kill everyone except the little girls, and then keep the girls as sex slaves.
“…but any young girl who has not known a man, keep for yourselves.”
He stopped the truck on the side of the road and left me to walk home lol.
Edit: just to be clear, the point was that the religious leadership was ordering them to do this, presumably at the direction of their god.
It’s a joke account on Twitter:
“I wish it need not have happened in my time” said Frodo.
“LMAO”, said Gandalf, “well, it has.”

35·10 months agoLooks like it uses cloudflare warp, which is a free service that cloudflare provides that’s like a somewhat less secure VPN? It used to expose your IP and just encrypt the content so your ISP couldn’t snoop on you, but websites could still see your IP. Apparently, cloudflare fixed the exposed-IP thing in 2022 though. Its also supposed to stabilize and improve the speed of your Internet connection.
It’s basically a VPN with better speeds and slightly worse security, from what I’m seeing. A good everyday service, but you probably don’t want to use it if you’re leaking national security info.
The average bit is ~0.5. Checkmate.

8·10 months agoI know the feeling lol my gf tells me I’m handsome all the time, but I’m in the ex-fat-kid gang, and all I see is my neck isn’t quite right, my shoulders are too hunched, my ass is too flat etc.
Every once in a while I’ll dress up in a suit, or she’ll take a picture of me reading on the couch or something, and for just a minute I’m like “who is that lanky bastard” lol

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the oddest/most "interesting" conversation you've had?
14·10 months agoHad a conversation with my kid the other day about a book I was reading and ended up discussing genetic modification and why people are concerned about it. We talked about the Chinese scientist who modified babies to resist HIV, issues with eugenics, racism, economic disparity, the whole bit. We were out getting some pizza, and I think the couple in the booth behind us was listening in lol.
We have odd conversations all the time though, to be fair.
The thread of fate is more like a frizzy ball of lint at this point.

I used it to extract thousands of rows from tables in PDFs and generate enumerations for them in various programming languages. I had to do some pre-processing with the Python script, and review all the output to make sure it didn’t screw up, but it saved me a lot of time.
