It’s hard to justify centrism in the context of the US, where one party is radically attacking peoples’ rights and re-writing the constitution to support it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•My therapist says she might have to report my abusive family to the authorities. How do I avoid being reported so the cops don't show up and make everything worse?
18·3 days agoThe therapist needs to have some reason to believe that a person is a threat to you or someone else. One purpose of the law is establishing community standards. Even if a single family all prefer to do nothing about the abuse, the community as a whole does not want to tolerate that kind of behavior in it. So really, it’s not supposed to help. It’s supposed to punish, to try to stop the behavior.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Am I allowed to hate the US government yet?
1·3 days agoWe’re only as strong as our alliances, which the current administration is destroying for really no good reason at all. If our allies abandon us, then we aren’t protected from attack. Not really.
It depends on the fabric. A lot of synthetic clothes are now made to do well in the dryer. But if it’s 100% cotton, it can be permanently ruined in the first dry.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•To those who are new to this whole fediverse/threadiverse/this thing, how has your experience been?
43·4 days agoIt gets better the more familiar you become with it. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone in real life. There are parts that are just way too jarring.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is your city building a ton of banks and gas stations?
1·4 days agoNot here. We mostly get redos. Bigger and shinier hospital, bigger and shinier engineering hall, replace a warehouse with a big and shiny apartment building. It’s crazy. We’ve got people doing drugs and sleeping on the streets, and we spend millions of dollars on a new library renovation.

I think it was probably this one that I read, though they did not use the word cure. They significantly improved symptoms.

431·5 days agoI saw recently they’ve cured Parkinsons for the first time, and I think HIV can be reversed now. So that’s pretty cool.
Oh, and I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but they fixed airport and hotel wifi. I don’t know why I thought shitty wifi in hotels and airports was something I would have to live with for the rest of my life. It just always was that way, so I thought it would always be that way. But the last time I went on vacation, blazing public wifi at the airport and at the hotel. with video playing. We are the future.
You’re doing it. It does not get easier.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever seen a man with a face like that?
5·5 days agoKind of. The thing about this guy is that he is really thin and fit compared to the average man today.
I am in law school. You could not pay me to do a PHD. Just no. The workload of school is just ridiculous. There are always 5 other things you could do, and, no matter how hard you work, you’ll never catch up to the smart ones. I miss being able to get my stuff done in a day and then turn my brain off.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•how would you deal with a relative yelling to you you killed his father just because you're the last nurse who treated him?

usually about $550/month including coffee and soda. I’m one person. I have tried to set a budget but I am really not good at it. I also don’t really believe in the idea of eating less healthy to save money. It seems short-sighted.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is the role of a government to do the will of the people, or to do whats right for the country?
1·6 days agoIt’s hard to argue for austerity in the American context, where the healthcare stipends being stripped away are less than 1% of the military’s budget. It’s not actually austerity, it’s just the government taking your taxes and then refusing to do its job.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you argue against "I have nothing to hide" in relation to privacy and security?
2·8 days agoYou have nothing to hide, but you do have vulnerabilities that can be exploited. In the capitalist context, right, your car tracks the way you drive to sell your data to insurance companies, so the insurance companies can raise your rates. There’s nothing stopping a company from, say, targeting you with discounts to induce an infrequent consumer to build a habit then raising the price after you developed a routine and preference for the product. Or, let’s say you recently purchased flights to a ski town in Colorado, a company can raise the prices on outdoor activity gear as you’re likely to purchase regardless of the cost.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do people who try to convince others to switch to metric focus so much on the conversions?
162·8 days agoThey keep complaining about it because we keep using the worse system for no reason. /shrug
