Technology@lemmy.world•AI companies are now destroying warehouses full of rare booksEnglish
52·1 day agoIt would be slightly less horrrible if they released the digitized books online, or even just paid archivist organizations to carefully do the job for them and make public the works to then train on.
But no. They choose the worst way to do everything.

2·3 days agoNGL I haven’t had much experience with the package managers because I’ve been installing everything with the konsole via
pacman -Sandflatpak install flathubcommands or manually if needed. I’m surprised to hear about the USB devices issue, even my analogue audio interface worked plug and play and I’ve never had to reseat them.

2·3 days agoHave you tried CachyOS? It’s built on Arch but it’s a lot easier to get into, let’s you pick a desktop environment such as KDE Plasma or GNOME in the installation, the install media itself is a portable OS.
Definitely good to keep an open mind while you shop around for your next distro.
Recently there was a hacker issue with the AUR repos, but most of the packages you need are likely already on the official CachyOS package search without requiring an AUR package.

2·3 days agoI might be exaggerating based on the little I’ve seen, particularly this post LINK which has a very misleading title, but the number of packages for AI integration to NixOS and forks for Agentic OS and workflows, the amount of support (real or otherwise) for AI in the NixOS communities, and articles like this one: LINK, would be a hard sell to tell me were all coincidence.

4·3 days agoI’m leaning on the Ase side so it obviously wouldn’t bother me as much as others, but I also generally don’t engage in relationships unless I’m confident in my ability to support both parties.

25·3 days agoA lot of people suddenly talking about NixOS lately but literally the only news I’ve seen about it in a while was that the maintainers are Slopping with AI Code.

Europe@feddit.org•Germany calls for end to EU unanimity rule to stop bloc 'standstill'English
1·3 days agoNice, glad to hear it.
I really don’t see where concerns about simple majorities come from.
The policy not yet being in effect means we should be vocal about any changes we want and any we don’t want. I was clear and explicit about wanting a large majority.

93·4 days agoA technically better election system than the USA allowed the Nazi party to take control at the end of the Weimar Republic.
A technically better system saw huge gains for the AfD recently.
A technically better system saw France throw shock elections and end up with another nonconfidence vote.
The only technically better system which was pleasantly surprising to me was Australia, going Labor recently.
Don’t get used to it, it’s maintained by sloppers so it’s only a matter of time before it breaks again.
It’s maintained by sloppers, idk why anybody would want to switch to that.
Nah, NixOS is maintained by sloppers. A balding fat pale as the moon fan of Elon Musk would be a better representation, classic middle aged slopper.
Do NOT promote or use NixOS. They maintainers are Sloppers.

61·4 days agoIDK about this. Johann Wadephul is part of the christian dems. I hope it’s at least a large majority because speaking as an american: simple majorities can really fuck your life up if you let them.
I would feel a lot better about this if there were more progressives currently in power, but it backslid last round of elections and is set to backslide again next time based solely on foreign election funds and psyops coming in.

Oddly Satisfying@lemmy.world•I took a picture of this resilient little plant in the train tracks.English
1·5 days agoIts growing where the train stops and water condenses on the AC and drips down.
Probably.

You’re right, it is different, the AI companies are misled into thinking this will generate some sort of profit but the Chinese were just doing it from a place of pure malice.
