Not everyone views it though that lens (though maybe they should). There are lots of people out there for whom LLMs are just another tool that they have become used to using and, in many cases, formed a bond with. However silly or groundless that may be when looked at rationally.

It’s not really strange at all that people would speak out against “hurting” one. Though it should be regarded in exactly the same way as if they were making the same argument about a set of living room furniture.

I guess what I’m saying is that while I don’t agree with them I empathize with the people who are in turn empathizing with the LLMs. It’s still a ridiculous and indefensible position, but I get it.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but the human capacity for empathy has extended to subjects not capable of emotion or pain since long before LLMs came around.

Lots of people don’t like “evil” paths in games because they feel bad about mistreating the NPCs. People regret throwing or damaging stuffed toys and may even apologize to them. There are people loyal to their toasters because they have reliably kept working for so long.

It’s no surprise at all that people empathize with LLMs. It would be more surprising if no one did.

Falling back to insults when you can’t provide a source isn’t terribly convincing.

I can at least provide examples of them stating directly the opposite.

I use Adobe Premiere for editing, and one of the many fun ways that Adobe is kind of ass is that it just doesn’t work on Linux.

As for your suggestion that he just reviews what he’s paid to do, sure, that seems plausible. I’m not trying to argue that it’s an impartial channel and people should be watching him. You certainly don’t need to defend a decision to not watch it.

There’s an important distinction between not caring about race in the sense that you treat all people you encounter with equal consideration, and not caring about race in the sense that you disregard all racially based socio-economic concerns. A person flippantly expressing a lack of caring reeks of the latter.

If a user needs Photoshop in their workflow then Linux isn’t an option for them. That is a problem with Linux, from a user perspective.

Who’s at fault for that problem is a different question, and I’d be surprised if LTT ever say that Linux is to blame.

He literally speaks to this point in his comment. He states that the goal of the Linux kernel project is to develop the Linux kernel, period. The social benefits from it being an open source project is a side effect. Just because it’s widely viewed as a “social good” doesn’t make it automatically a champion of every social issue that happens to show up in the course of its development.

There is absolutely nothing in the article to indicate the family’s political leanings or how they voted.

I offer the compressed sense of time as you age. Everything just seems to go by faster and faster leaving you wondering where all your time went when things are over.
