The Mist is a short story from King’s book Skeleton Crew. While I have seen the movie I preferred the written version better.

Originally it was published in 1980 as part of an anthology, but it was included in his Skeleton Crew collection in '85.

I do like the book more for the most part, but I 100% agree with King that the movie ending is better. Stephen King has never been as good at endings as he is with the rest of the story.
