Please please I really hope they will force US companies to start calling their chatbots SI instead of AI, and forbid them from using the term AI.
That would be such a funny PR/marketing nightmare. It’s such a cringe term :D

I found this being even more of a slippery slope. Your brain learns by making new neural pathways whenever you are thinking about something. If you skip the discovery part of it, and just read a finished train of thoughts/explanation, withoit having to carve the whole path yourself, it will not stick.
There’s a reason why just reading a book without doing any outside the box exercises, or just readinbg answers to them without figuring it out, is almost pointless and nothing will stick with you.
Frustration tolerance is a skill you need to practice and develop, and the more you get used to not getting stuck for a while, the harder it will be to not give up and just go find a direct answer, megating most of the learnig.
What, you don’t have your SWAP set to 1TB Google Drive share?

This is cool! My sanity with self-hosting was mostly perserved by MASH, they have an amazing ansible scripts I never had any problem with, which is usually rare.
I can’t imagine figuring all of this on my own.
I honestly never thought about that. :D
If they have AR screen (no idea tbh), then I’d love to have one to see if an IRL adblock is possible. It shouldn’t be hard, OCR is already there, and just overlaying a rectangle over adds shouldn’t be that difficult.
Unfortunatel, it would need an always on camera, and people are dickheads who just have to start misusing that.

I’m really a fan of the dogmatized occultisms. The orders like Illuminates of Thanateros, Golden Dawn, John Dee’s books, even Wicca, Discordians.
It’s really interesting rabbit hole that’s a nice open-mindness exercise, plus it’s fascinating to experiment with.
Almost everyone I’ve met who showed any interrest in occultism was always taking it too seriously, to the point of sounding unhealthy. They either knew and read the actual sources, and were too much into it, or they had some kind of random vibes-based new-age approach (and also were too much into it to the point of sounding insane).
I never really understood that. Maintaining an open mind while still keeping a little bit of dostance from it, taking it more like a research into history with a bit of curious practice (basically LARPing would be a perfect analogy), is fun and what I did, but people usually just let it take over their lifes in very unhealthy fashion.
I’ve tried out several of the orders/practices, and each one was fascinating to get into, I would say had overall positive effect on my life, even if it was just having fun larping/method acting and exploring what effects it has on my mental state.
I never interacted with the community, though. I’ve only met one other person who has similar aproach, and a lot of people who you’d consider insane upon hearing how they talk about it.
I highly recommend giving it a try with open mind. I work in IT, never really was into spiritualism or religion, but getting through i.e this book on Wicca, with an open mind, without prejudice and giving it a honest try, was really an eye openning experience. I didn’t stick with it for long, but the few months I tried were suprisingly fun. It’s basically solo LARPing.
Also, the whole history around that and other cults is really fascinating read, but trying out the practice is where most of the controversal (for some) fun is. But again - it’s like with religion - you have to be careful not to let it take over your life, annoy others with it, or use it as an excuse for anything, from why your life sucks or why you can be a dick.
Is it a compression when you need presumably gigabites of a model to reconstruct the data?
It’s basically the same as saying I can shatter compressions records by hashing the thing and using a rainbow table to decompress it.

The fact that Meta has a C-suite position that’s called Chief Privacy Officer is my favorite absurdly ironic fact.
I can’t imagine how can anyone apply to that with a strait face and clear conscience, but that’s prpbably true for most positions at Meta, aside from like Beat Games and the like.

I’m pretty sad that people have to be perverts and glasses with cameras got such a bad rep.
It is deserved and not surprising, and I’m not trying to defend them, but I was so looking forward to AR glasses with cameras, so I could finally get a working ad-block IRL, which should be easily possible with the tech.
But, that requires a camera. It’s a shame, and I’ll definitely rather continue dealing with ads than support enabling perverts (or Meta, anyway), but it sounded like such a cool use-case.
I hate how there are always groups who have to ruin everything for others :(

Not trying to defend them, and I haven’t looked at the feature set of the new Discord integration, but I can imagine a reason for most of those - assuming, of course, that you can basically chat in through WoW on discord.
Afaik it links channels, but to know if your profile is in the server the channel is on, or join you there, it would need to manage and read servers, no? Of course, there are probably better ways how to do that, that respect your privacy a little bit more.
The friendlist I’m having a hard time justifying, can you send DMs from WoW?
But I do honestly wonder how would a MVP permission set looked like if you tried implementing the same integration they are doing, whatever it is.
But yeah, Microslop hoarding data is probably the reason for most of those.

Exactly this, especially the last sentence.
I only have pretty basic machine learning knowledge, based on a few Master’s classes at college while I was doing gamedev, and even with that I can tell that the way they are expecting to get AGI by just feeding more data into a language model is simply not happening.
I remember a comparison from one of the AI-pilled tech-bros when AI was starting to get attention, and his metaphor about AGI was something along the lines of “Imagine a difference between a medieval commoner and Albert Einstein, that’s the difference in inteligence AI will soon have to the smartest people we know now”.
But that doesn’t make sense with the current approach. Imagine Einstein writing his cutting-edge theories, and the commoner is watching him behind his shoulder and vetting anything he does. Scratching his ideas, forcing him to redo it, if he doesn’t like it, pointing to a reddit thread about why. There’s no way he would ever finish anything new.
Unless they figure out a completely new way how to do AI reasoning, there is no way we’re getting anywhere near AGI. And that is also becoming more unlikely the longer we go with this approach, because every AI-pilled company is heavily outsourcing all of development to the current models, reducing their employee (and the whole worlds) innovation potential and skill. This is probably the last generation that can do serious academia, unless there are drastic measures done to limit access to AI in education. It’s fucked.

I’m kind of looking forward to this, in a way? I’ve been struggling with social network addiction, while I was fortunate enough to skip on doomscrolling FB, Instagram, TikTok and all that bullshit, I was always mostly just on Reddit, now Lemmy (but I’ve also been getting back to Reddit more than I should), or watching youtube.
Over the past 15 years I’ve been more or less (usually less) successful in cutting off that habit, but I’ve unfortunately always fallen back into it.
My utmost hate for fingerprinting and any kind of verification will make me finally cold turkey that shit. I’ve already seen it with youtube - every time it forces me to sign in to prove I’m not a bot, I fuck off and go do something else. Same with Reddit.
So, yeah.

Kind of have an urge now to post an issue that the nstall skill has installed a malware on my machine.
It’s pretty plausible that could happen, and good luck debugging that.
While you’re technically right, I’d say that FOSS in general is more than just a tool, and Linux is The FOSS project.
Deciding to share your work freely and cooperate with strangers as a contributor is, especially in a world driven by profits, a pretty major lifestyle/philosophy and an act of resistance against capitalism.
Of course, you can just exploit the ecosystem and treat it as any other tool, that happens to be free, but I would say that that is the explanation about “people that worship the altar of Linus” that you’re looking for. Spending basically your entire life to help make something, especially as complex as an operating system, for others and for free is something that, at least in my eyes, is worthy of admiration and I have utmost repsect for people who contribute.

I can imagine that works for most cases, but when you try to include some lesser known and obscure library, that is heavily typosquatted, you might run into issues.
At this point I’m seriously considering just running something like openclaw with a basic model to just keep clicking on random stuff and browsing the internet, changing personalities each day at random, to flood my IPs data.
I’m glad we have options here in Europe. Not many, but there are at least 3 mobile and internet providers at my location, so whenever one tries to pull something like this, I just call them that I’m switching providers. I’ve netted a permanent 50% discount and even managed to convince them to keep the discount at my old flat (which was a student’s shared flat where my friends still live) and also transfer it to my new home I have with my partner.
As far as I know, they can give you massive discounts, but you have to be willing to go through hell and run into a good call operator.
But also, that was like 10 years ago and I didn’t need to do it again. I can imagine that in the age of clankers, things may be a lot different (also with the transition to late-stage capitalism and enshittification).

This will be a goldmine for malware groups that are poisoning AIs that use web search to get them to use their malware-ridden version of software and libraries, and I’m here for it with popcorn at the ready.
I kinda hope this will get more common, because the only people affected kind of deserve it, plus it’s a great way how to filter sloprojects at a glance.
While not strictly a dinner, I’m usually opting (or at least suggest, if the other side would be interested) for a local billiard place. It’s not just a pub with a random one table, but an actual cue sports place/bar, with like 20 tables. It does have drinks and is also a restaurant, and in general looks relatively fancy.
I like billiard (pool) because it’s easy to pick up, gives you something to do during/between conversations without requiring too much focus, can be done in fancy clothes without needing to change into anything, and can look fancy with drinks. It’s also something that everyone plays basically on the same skill level, whether you are playing for a first time or for 50th time, with only people who are actually practicing regularly being noticeably better (which I’m not), so it’s never really too one-sided. And it’s fun.
So far it has worked well.
