When I first started programming I was constantly thinking the same thing: should I learn this or that language? Will it be useful or a waste of time?, etc but it really doesn’t matter. Nearly every modern language has the same core principles of variables, constants, functions and data structures. Once you’ve gotten the hang of those ideas then switching languages is just a matter of learning the new syntax which isn’t hard when you already know how it’s going to work

I do loosely use stars to gauge how popular a library/framework is before investing a lot of time in it, however, I do also use other metrics like PR count, issues, etc

I hate having to harass people to review my PRs too but getting rid of them entirely seems insane to me. Most of the issues with pull requests can be sourced more to the size of changes rather than their existence. If you can keep your PRs small enough that someone can review it in 5-10min then things get a lot easier for everyone but deleting the step entirely means nobody is watching what’s being submitted

Like, you might have someone working on something in a new codebase but misunderstanding the architecture or just going in the wrong direction in general and a review is the best way to correct course before getting too far in

That exact chain of events happened to me at my last job and I audibly laughed realising it was my own code. To my own credit though, it was a file I had written four years prior which at that point was more than half my whole career in the past

I guess I’m so used to it at this point that I just add the shift automatically and don’t really consider it annoying

Meta is largely the reason for the current state of the world via their purposeful boosting of alt-right talking points. They’ve helped incite a genocide ffs. They’re not actively on the streets shooting people but this is what the company pushed for

I’m not American but I am in tech and have been unemployed since January and even though my financial situation is grim, Meta and Palantir are two companies I would never, ever work for or even apply to. There’s always plenty of other companies to apply to (which is what I did and I start somewhere tomorrow!)

My car has been broken for weeks but I haven’t bothered fixing it because I can walk to everything I need and own an escooter (and a bike i’m slowly fixing) for anything further. Yup, it’s very expensive to be poor.

I’ve almost finished paying off a mattress I got two years ago and since it’ll be paid within the required timeframe, I won’t have paid anything extra vs buying it outright. If something happened though and I couldn’t pay it quick enough, suddenly the total owing starts growing faster than the monthly payments. You could end up in a situation where you’re paying more on interest than the original cost of the thing.

Go mainly. fmt has some functions to do the same sort of formatting but I loved the minimal syntax in Python. JavaScript has a really nice syntax for it as well actually
