Consider vapes, rather than smoking. You can get your nicotine without the worst side effects. You can also taper your nicotine levels over time, so you get less and less. That’s what I did and it worked well for me. Eventually I just stopped vaping, and since I had tapered my nicotine levels I didn’t really crave it (other than the activity itself, but even that went away unless I think about it specifically).

  • Unless you’re going about it like an asshole, no. You’re communicating, standing by your position, and setting a boundary.

She knows smoking is dangerous, she knows you don’t like it, she knows you want her to quit, she’s quit before so she knows how to do it.

Have you considered compromising with vapes? Still not as good for you as not smoking at all, but significantly healthier than smoking and doesn’t make everything smell horrific. She can get that nicotine buzz she craves with very few of the downsides. She can also then taper her nicotine content and quit that way if she decides to.

  • And it’s on the IAEA to declare that they are indeed working on a weapons program, not speculation and assumption like yours.

Okay. Don’t use your reason if you’d prefer not to. It does make me wonder though:

Do you think the killing of the civilian scientists was wrong because they were civilian scientists, or because they were ostensibly working on an energy program?

Because as I said, I’m not claiming the murders were justified, just that we ought to be honest about the why.

There are plenty making the argument that Iran needs a nuclear weapons program to prevent exactly these types of attacks. That is intellectually honest. I’m not sure where I fall on that argument, I’d rather no one have nuclear weapons (but obviously that’s not going to happen).

The difference between 5% and 60% enrichment is pretty huge. And the research and effort required to get there is neither cheap nor easy. If what they’re after is nuclear energy, there is absolutely no reason to continue risking the ire of the international community and the repeated attacks by Israel. They’ve had energy-level uranium for a very long time already.

The saddest thing about this story you’ve told (which is very familiar to me) is that OSC, while heavily influenced by his Mormonism, didn’t need to be the homophobe he is.

Brandon Sanderson, who is also a Mormon, has multiple LGBT characters. They are mostly supporting roles so far, but they’re there. He even has an ace character (though mentioning who might be a spoiler for some). Then there are the Kandra, who change gender at whim. And there’s the Reshi king who was born female, always identified as a king and not a queen, and when he gained Radiant powers his body naturally reformed male to reflect his self-image (Investiture naturally reshaping a highly Invested physical form to fit the person’s self-image was well-established already, I think most clearly spelled out in Warbreaker but has had a few examples in Stormlight Archive).

Anyway my point is we can act like Orson Scott Card is a homophobe because of his religion, and certainly that probably helped inform his views, but anyone as traveled and informed as he is should have had those views challenged enough to rethink them by now.

  • paying for youtubers

Like it or not the platform is full of people trying to make a living independently producing content. Most of them are not making very much money. Watching with an adblocker means they aren’t earning any revenue, which is unsustainable. Watching with a Premium subscription means I don’t see ads and they get more revenue (even more so than ad-supported views).

Those people aren’t massive corporations. They’re independent creators. And generally speaking the content I watch on YouTube is content I want to support.

I’m not trying to say it’s like, inherently ethically wrong to watch YouTube without ads or Premium. But it certainly isn’t ethically superior.

I doubt it. Regardless of the current stage of machine learning, everyone is now tuned in and pushing the tech. Even if LLMs turn out to be mostly a dead end, everyone investing in ML means that the ability to do LOTS of floating point math very quickly without the heaviness of CPU operations isn’t going away any time soon. Which means nVidia is sitting pretty.
