Technology@lemmy.world•Big Brother Is Watching Your Online Criticism of ICE CrackdownsEnglish
1·6 days agoCops seem to be justified in shooting and killing people that just show a gun in their own house after they break down the wrong door(or the right one). 2A rights don’t really exist either.

1·6 days agoAre you saying the products they sell are shit?
I thought I would treat myself to an IMAX showing of Oppenheimer. Worst experience of my life. Seats were old and uncomfortable with sticky shit everywhere. The seating arrangement was shit and my view was less than desirable. Audio kicked ass, but I had to walk out. I ended up going the next day to a regular showing at a different theater with the recliners and had a much better experience.
I haven’t been back to the theater since but I have been to several local stage theaters and have enjoyed that immensely. Otherwise, I just watch all my movies at home now
Arrrrr
Used to? Like they don’t anymore? That’s disappointing. My local library still carries DVDS.

Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix kills casting from phonesEnglish
11·13 days agoCasting support is still available on older Chromecast devices or TVs that support Google Cast natively, according to Netflix’s support page, but only for subscribers on pricier ad-free plans, which start from $17.99 per month. Netflix users with an ad-supported subscription ($7.99 per month) will be unable to cast from their phones even if they own legacy Chromecast devices.
Paywall already there. Excerpt taken from the linked article.

391·14 days agoIn 2021, Moxie Marlinspike, creator of the encrypted messaging app Signal, pointed to several vulnerabilities in Cellebrite’s UFED and Physical Analyzer software that allowed for arbitrary code execution on Windows computers running the software. One exploit he detailed involved the UFED scanning a specially formatted file, which could then be used to execute arbitrary code on the computer running the UFED. Marlinspike wrote that the code could then “[modify] not just the Cellebrite report being created in that scan, but also “all previous and future generated Cellebrite reports” from all previously scanned devices and all future scanned devices in any arbitrary way.”[27] Marlinspike also found that Cellebrite software was bundled with out-of-date FFmpeg DLL files from 2012, which lacked over 100 subsequent security updates. Windows Installer packages, extracted from the Windows installer for iTunes and signed by Apple, were also found, which he said raised legal concerns.[28] Cellebrite responded that the company “is committed to protecting the integrity of our customers’ data, and we continually audit and update our software in order to equip our customers with the best digital intelligence solutions available.”[29] The report by Signal followed an announcement by Cellebrite in 2020 that it had developed technology to crack encrypted messages in the Signal app, a claim the company later retracted and downplayed.[30][31] The announcement by Marlinspike raised questions about the integrity of data extracted by the software,[32][33] and prompted Cellebrite to patch some of the vulnerabilities found by Signal and to remove full support for analyzing iPhones.[34][35]

Sounds like it is just malware to me.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do some people try to humanize the wealthy and people in positions of power?
5·15 days agoIsn’t dehumanizing kind of the whole Nazi thing?
It’s hilarious that there were a bunch of articles recently about “omg, so many Zorin downloads!” Then the only person I’ve ever seen even mention it gets downvoted. Makes me think it was just some astro turf campaign.

13·20 days agoWhich is weird right? Who is recommending this distro for it to surge? Is this actually a lot of downloads when compared to other distros? I’ve never seen it listed once in any of the many “which distro should I switch to?” posts.

Technology@lemmy.world•Unremovable Spyware on Samsung Devices Comes Pre-installed on Galaxy Series DevicesEnglish
92·26 days agoSamsung has been accused of shipping budget Galaxy A and M series smartphones with pre-installed spyware that users can’t easily remove.
The software in question, AppCloud, developed by the mobile analytics firm IronSource, has been embedded in devices sold primarily in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
So these are cheap phones mostly being sold in the Middle East.
