  • Well, for something like the Wirtschaftswunder, it is really hard to pinpoint a single “reason”, but arguably the Lastenausgleichsgesetz played a huge role. It was a massive redistribution of wealth (nowadays shunned as a so-called “social benefit program”, funnily enough it was specifically to subsidize refugees). With that, a wealth tax and crazy high income tax and higher business taxation, the government spending ratio went through the roof. Add to that, that poor people (read: the refugees from the Eastern areas) could (and needed to, as they lost everything) consume a lot more, et voila, Wirtschaftswunder. Easy recipe, which could just be repeated today. When the wealth would be moving again, the economy would explode again. But, alas, the majority does not have the money to consume, and the wealthy hoard the wealth instead of consuming. If we only could change that somehow.

  • When people say “We cannot do that because of GDPR/insurance”. I do not know, why these two “reasons” trigger me so hard, but: you dismissed an idea within microseconds, because you ever read the GDPR or the insurance conditions? You really know all the court rulings and intricacies around those of the last decades, to know within half a second, that something is not feasible?

Really, those are just magic words which for some reason makes everybody go “yep, that must be true. We can’t do anything anymore, because of insurance or GDPR. That ist how the world works”.

It’s different though, you swipe to get to the other characters instead of clicking the button more often. T9 was awesome in its time, but it also kind of relies on a dictionary, like the swiping on “standard” smartphone keyboards. In ThumbKey you type every single character, but it is fast, if you internalize the layout.

  • Well, concerning the floods: flooding is still really bad and usually affects a huge area. Normally it is not like one village floods and everybody dies and the next village is completely fine. So, for people who do not get around a lot it might feel like the whole world was flooded. Then maybe they hit a few bad years in a row, and BAM, God or somebody wants to punish humanity story confirmed.

  • When I was starting to hit puberty, my mother got a severe depression, culminating in a suicide attempt. I remember her for the following ten-ish years as just sitting on her chair and reading or in her bed. When she managed to have a shower, it was a great day for her.

My father managed it all. Still had his taxing job, but now doing all the household, cooking, raising the kids and being supportive for my mother. He was there as father, as provider, as a husband. Eventually my mother was healing and back to her former, energetic self.

I don’t know how my father did it, honestly. My wife and I are struggling with managing our two children as is, if my wife were out of the equation I’d collapse immediately. Granted, my sister and I were a lot older than my kids are now, when shit hit the fan, but still…crazy impressive.

So yeah, basically he is a role model in perseverance and a lot of other things.
