Linux@programming.dev•Kagi Ends Orion Browser Development for Linux, Will Open-Source ItEnglish
4·4 days agoOne of the only reasons why Orion is neat, it’s the only one out of the lot in iOS that supports extensions, since on iOS, all the browsers are based on WebKit. It’s not particularly great otherwise, it’s just Safari with extensions support + a couple productivity things after all, and it’s closed-source (it doesn’t look like the iOS app will go FOSS any time soon)
On Android, we have a duopoly instead, which isn’t that much better, but at least one of the two (Firefox) allows extensions on mobile browsers.
And there’s no reason why you should use Orion on a desktop OS, since better options are plentiful (Firefox and forks, even Chromium ones like Helium or Ungoogled Cr)
I do hope that some of the tricks in Orion could be used in Linux browsers that are actually good, especially for mobile Linux! Firefox does work on it, but only with tweaks (and even then, it’s not fantastic compared to something like GNOME Web)

2·4 days agoNo, the design is not the same. The shape is different and, more importantly, the angle is also different!
Yes, I did mention alternative software for Logitech mice! Solaar looks awesome if you have a Logitech mouse. The mouse I mentioned can also switch between 3 devices, I think that’s a pretty common feature on most mice nowadays.
Definitely more of a hassle to replace the battery, but good to see it’s somewhat replaceable at least. AA batteries are a lot easier to replace though, you don’t need to pry out the mouse feet and it’s much quicker to swap it out when it runs out!
Rubber will wear out faster than a normal plastic finish, but if it has lasted for your hands that’s good too! I’ve just heard lots of people, particularly in humid climates, where the rubber disintegrates quickly. I’m from HK so humidity is a big issue, so this mouse isn’t a good option for me (if you live somewhere drier, it could be neat!)
And again, the one I have is really neat too with the fun colours (!!!) and magnetic grip thingy. The shape is more comfortable for me too, but hey our hands are all different

2·5 days agoVertical mice aren’t a Logitech trademark. The shape is noticeable different from the MX Vertical, it has the cool wrist rest magnetic thing, and the angle it sits is different. The colours are a lot nicer than the graphite black of the MX Vertical. Also, the MX Vertical (at least the current revision) does not use replaceable batteries.
Logitech Options doesn’t support Linux, so no, it’s not “well supported on everything”, though there are community made alternatives that seem really neat! I imagine the mouse itself does, but nearly all mice should work on Linux so Logitech is not unique in this
The MX Vertical is over $100, over five times the price of this cheap little guy, so I don’t think the price is worth it, especially since this cheap one has fun colours + a more comfortable shape for me (YOUR HANDS MAY VARY)

2·5 days agoI just like that it has replaceable AAs, plus the fun colours. I don’t think it will actually last “for life”, but hopefully it will last for a long while!

Linux@programming.dev•Firefox Gets (too) Rounded, Flatpak for CLI & Dev tools, Ubuntu does tiling now - Linux Weekly NewsEnglish
3·5 days agoNote that Firefox does bake in some telemetry by default, which needs to be manually disabled, but if you don’t want to deal with that you have LibreWolf! (Zen is another good one if you like vertical tabs)
And still having Manifest V2 support and not supporting a monopoly is always good!

4·5 days agoThere are much bigger concerns for Chrome for most people I guess (removal of Manifest V2 support, Google spyware, excessive RAM usage, monopoly, etc.)

A bit unfortunate it’s not sold in other stores though

5·5 days agoI thunk the main problem is how it’s forced on everyone, whether they like it or not. Rounded corners should be an option, some people like their boxier corners!

10·6 days agoI personally like the Nova design, BUT I know lots of people hate it and prefer the old one, so it really sucks that it’s buried in about:config. I feel like boxy vs rounded should be a toggle, you know! If they eventually drop the about:config, maybe LibreWolf or other forks will continue to have the option for the old design (?)

edit: It is on Amazon, for $30!

72·6 days agoOops just checked the link, you might be right. It guess it does make sense that it’s the way colours are used rather than just what the colours are. The way part.
Sorry about that mate! I’ll amend the post then

81·6 days agoVertical mice are AWESOME! Super comfy and it feels more natural for me to move the mouse around.
I imagine you can rebind the side buttons to whatever if you wanted to, but a scroll wheel on the top would be difficult to reach!

Linux@programming.dev•System 76's COSMIC Desktop becomes the first major DE to take a stand against AI with new policy that rejects AI/LLM contributionsEnglish
3·7 days agoCOSMIC is kind of neat though, it’s not for everyone, but it’s always good to have another option! A lot of the customisation options are really nice, I’ll always be a KDE Plasma person, but I can see the appeal of it.
Perhaps in this case, you are Wesley.
Double negatives are fun! It’s a little weird how, depending on the context and language, they can either be positive or extra-negative. “I don’t see nothing!” is often used to mean you can’t see anything, the double negatives reinforce each other rather than cancel out into a positive meaning. Similar for “I don’t have no …” or “we don’t need no …”
They are supporting devices deemed obsolete by manufacturers and are working towards making your phone last longer, I would say that’s pretty environmentally conscious. The “eco” TLD makes sense, I think, when you look at their goals.

Yooooo nice! Congrats!
