Yeah. grad and hexbear are rather toxic, with .ml being a mixed bag. All three instances are infamous for being filled with authoritarians referred to derogatorily as tankies by other socialists and anarchists.

Nah that part is fine, but their comment history has them denounce the protests in hongkong and their comment implies this post is bait, and calls being a tankie “political flavoring”.

There is no one conversation you can have or argument or proof you can present that will convince them. People unfortunately don’t work like that. The more invested they are in their position the more difficult it will be to get them out. Your best bet is to not push them out, but point out capitalist and unethical positions of both russia and china, without letting such a convo devolve into too much of an argument.

Keep in mind that both china and russia are capitalist nations. Both have hierarchical businesses with managers and bosses, and both suppress unions and workers rights. They might not believe you if you tell them this as they seem to conflate being not aligned with the west makes you anti-imperialist which they conflate with being anti-capitalist. They might also claim that these nations aren’t socialist but transitioning into socialism so any failure to meet the definition of socialism is excusable in their eyes.

Going all in on lots of proof is either going to give them a lot to think about or more likely will just have them dismiss everything you have to say to them and have them write you off as someone who is emotional and gullible (they might believe any evidence you present is capitalist propaganda).

The best best bet is being someone they respect who they view as very knowledgeable telling them they are wrong, someone capable of providing historical sources etc.

Convincing them that russia sucks should be easier than changing their position on china, at least if they are even slightly reasonable. Might be possible to change their mind on china as well if your angle is that china is a disappointment when it comes to socialism, but I dunno. I’ve never convinced a tankie before.

Good news! No one here mentioned planned economies! While some people who criticize capitalism only want to improve it, some do want to explore alternatives such as planned economies or market socialism. It’s also possible to have a planned economy and not have a society even remotely similar to the soviet union.

Edit: You know, sorry about that the meme does directly call out markets, but it doesn’t exactly imply a soviet style anything. Again, socialism only requires that people own their own workplaces etc., which means it allows for a wide variety of economic systems.

My experience as a regular here, a trans person myself, and as friends with many trans people is that this is how most people handle this. No reasonable person gets mad at you for using the wrong pronouns even if it hurts their feelings, unless you are doing it on purpose of course. Even people who you’ve told your pronouns to might make an honest mistake at some point. It happens.

Yes, having our pronouns visible is so we don’t have to explicitly tell them to people, and some cis people also use them as a show of solidarity and/or to make it so that phobes can’t assume someone is trans by the presence of pronouns.

You can’t prove that material existence exists, but you experience your thoughts, so I think “I think” here more refers to experience/qualia/consciousness more so than anything else. You can’t really prove that anything at all exists, but you do experience something, so you know at the very least that your experience exists.
