While there IS a movie called “The Fog”, The Mist is based on a Stephen King story by the same name. He probably didn’t go with fog because of another book being published relatively recently (at the time in 1980) called “The Fog”
Originally it was published in 1980 as part of an anthology, but it was included in his Skeleton Crew collection in '85.
I do like the book more for the most part, but I 100% agree with King that the movie ending is better. Stephen King has never been as good at endings as he is with the rest of the story.
I think the fog was a different film and that’s why.
The ending was really good though.

The Mist is a short story from King’s book Skeleton Crew. While I have seen the movie I preferred the written version better.
