      Uhh, because George Lucas said so. The original trilogy is an analogy for the Vietnam war. Nazis were obviously an inspiration as well, but you can’t possibly look at the battle of endor and not see the vietnam parallel.

        I think there was WWII motifs because at the time the original trilogy was being filmed, left over weapons, uniforms, etc were extremely cheap to buy and there was a lot of it available. Lot of material for low cost is always good for film.
