Rimu basically went nuts and made a List, like The List from the Tesseract guy. Except this one was baked at the code level of the software running the backend of the communities, so communities got forced to ban left-wing aligned content on update without a choice in the matter. Plus, the software had CCP-style shadow profiling of people to hide their posts, and in at least one known case editorializing someone’s posts on client view, without the poster being made aware that their content was being editorialized (essentially, attributing them false speech).
Rimu and the Lemmy devs are all complex characters. For instance, the Lemmy devs are widely known to edit people’s messages without telling them. Otoh, most of us consider that fine. Note that this is a weird, conspiratorial manner of phrasing the slur word filter that changes a message’s content after submission, and obviously the author will subsequently see that their message has been altered from what they had intended - there have been numerous posts over the years asking why this is, from people who did not realize that this feature existed.
Rimu’s addition of an attribution not to singular people but to whole entire URL domains or instances is one such example - it is not “blocking” or “filtering” content, but allowing instance admins a third option to retain the content while placing a message next to it, which could for instance warn users that their home instance takes no responsibility for the correctness of such a message, or that the expectations for comment replies differs from the norms. Otherwise the only other option would be to filter out the message entirely - which I also note that the Lemmy devs are infamous for doing extremely often anyway. Rimu thus offers this as a LESSER limitation upon free speech than what the Lemmy devs have deigned to offer.
The PieFed software is “opinionated” - that’s valid - but most of the hate it gets is extremely overblown, while overlooking how it offers MORE rights to people than Lemmy. We don’t need to be so tribal - which I admit I’ve been myself for far too long.
Anyway, FOSS is free software regardless, and anyone at all could fork it at any time. In fact, PyLova already did just that, and is even adding several nice features that PieFed lacks:-).
