Containers are the answer to “why is my hard drive completely full”
They are both the answer to “why is my project not working here where it’s working there” and “why do I need 17 copies of libc in their own little soft jails?”
It’s pruned down to a very small size. Occupies only a couple mb on disk. By default leaves out a bunch of features that are unnecessary for a container base image.
Docker took off because Ubuntu can’t run current software. Now you need multiple copies of an up to date Linux visualized just to keep it interacting with old software on a base system we insist we need.
If all your docker images prove that an up to date Linux can run, then why not just make the main system up to date and you won’t need docker as much.
I mean, I just updated the wallpaper on that machine to be Ask Jeeves for maximum millennial retro points for when I use it and can tell at a glance which stupid VM I am looking at.

You can get weird problems due to musl when trying to use alpine with software that wasn’t expecting it, what else would you want?

This is where I spat my tea: not because jenkins is super old but because I still have residual PTSD from using it.
