These instructions don’t appear to be documented. Here’s a post from a bit while ago that covers the basic functions of participating on Lemmy via Mastodon mentions.
Lemmy & Mastodon are completely different beasts with different formatting and function. This is a terrible abuse of ActivityPub IMO and degrades both services
100% agree. My local instance has a lot of posts coming from Mastodon and I simply don’t like it. I wonder if they even see my replies.
Imo, AP was created with a great deal of integration in mind without being prescriptive. It’s hard to gauge what abuse really is when the feature in question is marginal and a bit inconvenient to use as other commenters have pointed out. I look at it more as a “look what we can do” type of thing.
It’s true this is a thing that you can do, but the experience seems pretty degraded vs. just registering an account with a Lemmy/Mbin/PieFed/Sublinks (did I miss any?) instance which is natively configured for the kind of threaded conversations that exist on this segment of the fediverse. The instructions basically amount to “Go to a Lemmy instance and use its interface to find a community you’re interested in, then copy the link to the discussion you want to interact with and paste that into your Mastodon instance’s search bar, then reply to the post that appears. It’s that simple!”
If you only interact with threads occasionally or you just want to try it out from Mastodon, this is workable, but you need a lot of patience for the busywork that’s involved.
True, the masto timeline is weird and messed up. Hozever, the oreason i use mastodon and iceshrimp is because my experience on Lemmy is also degraded.
I need hashtag badly, we need the fediverse connection. I think english speaking communities doesn’t notice this problem because they have enough people to talk, share content…
The support of hashtags is missing, we can’t interact with peertube account, nor mastodon. Mbin is better. Piefed will work on it, they did a tremendous job with feed, pixelfed, peertube. it’s an amazing experience. They are pretty close to lemmy parity functionalities and they even surpass them.
Only few options are missing :
- crosspost
- mobile app (interstellar will support piefed)
- comment and mod view
But yeah, as you said xposting from mastodon is lot work but some masto user came, so i’m happy :)
The fact that The Fediverse apps are compatible with each other is amazing. This in theory means that one can create your own Fediverse app as long as its compliant to the specifications, right? For example, we could create a LinkedIn clone or something similar?
Yes, and there are already lots of different ones that, at least partially, work together:
Don’t know if there is something LinkedIn like though
That looks out of date, Kbin has been replaced my Mbin pretty much.
Is that the same pic I’ve seen posted for like two years now? Are half of those still around? Are many new ones missing?
kbin has been discontinued but there is a fork called mbin, piefed and loops are missing and some very small projects, also bridgyfed isn’t there but it’s still a pretty good overview
I’d say it’s missing NodeBB forum software since they just added ActivityPub support.

Yes, but the spec is intentionally flexible about some things, so a bit of work has to be done to ensure compatibility.

You can do this on Mbin too
Check out fedia.io or kbin.earth to check it out.
