Technology@lemmy.world•Duolingo CEO says AI is a better teacher than humans—but schools will exist ‘because you still need childcare’English
10·7 months agoHow can you be that dumb and a ceo at the same time…
These people are going to be fucking mad when they learn about braille books. “1/10, couldn’t read it, doesn’t have words in it!”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever had the realization mid-argument, that you were very wrong?English
12·7 months agoSeveral times! And not necessarily wrong, but missing a perspective that changes my opinion. That’s how we learn and grow. It’s also why you and more people should read books.
I’d love to see some reports of “gun toting Americans” blasting the shit out of ICE agents. The problem is ice agents and gun toting Americans are the same group.
I’m writing a book on adaptations. I wouldn’t consider myself a nerd, but writing a book about adapting works from one medium to another is very nerdy.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If all your basic needs were met and you didn't have to work to get by, what would you do with your life?English
4·8 months agoWrite, read and analyze literature. Hopefully I’ll be able to do it as a job.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google’s dominance on search is declining – for the first time ever!English
501·8 months agoI switched when the answers I got started to become bullshit. I’d google a simple question just to double check if it was correct, but it gave me something completely different. Something so out of the realm of possibility that I was baffled.
I check the sources for the answer and they were not even related. After that I started paying more attention to how messed up google had become, and I had enough.
Google scholar however is still something I need… even though I dislike American corporations.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•From your standards, are abusive people or those who cause trauma/discrimination “evil”?English
5·8 months agoI have a parent who will intentionally set his children up against each other to make them dislike each other. Why? Because he finds it entertaining.
He would take or break something you had, and blame one of the other siblings. When he got called out for it, he’d threaten with a beating. Physical abuse happened, but not nearly as often as psychological. And it was all so he could gain trust, power or just be entertained.
To me, that’s an evil person. Intentionally hurting others and taking joy from it, is pretty bad. But it’s a whole new level of evil when it’s your kids.
Again, what is your point? That having laws makes you not free? That’s something we all know, it’s not something you have discovered all by yourself.
It’s a basic societal understanding that if we live in a society there will be laws to stop bad shit from happening.
But you seem to think stopping predators is limiting your freedom. It’s such a stupid argument. But you don’t get that.
Edit: https://www.vg.no/nyheter/i/kwOrM6/norske-andrea-20-advart-mot-aa-demonstrere-i-usa-skikkelig-skummelt That’s a link to an article about a Norwegian student who’s being warned against protesting in the US for fear of being imprisoned. You know, limiting their freedom of speech.
You are such a bad faith actor it’s insane.

Europe@feddit.org•The thing about Europe: it’s the actual land of the free nowEnglish
61·9 months agoImagine going to jail for breaking the law! How dare Europe call themselves free when they uphold societal rules like that?!
Are you intentionally trying to mislead by intentionally not understanding laws?
America isn’t free because you can’t kill a healthcare exec without being imprisoned!
Watch out for the leopard!
In Norway last year we had a case where 5 16-19 yo set up a sextrap for a guy in his 40s.
The teens claimed he’s a pedo, beat him, filmed it and posted it online.
All of the “pedohunters” involved were found guilty on all accounts. The guy is free and getting a big pay out from the teens.
It’s really unfortunate, but these kinds of people aren’t in it to prevent child abuse. They’re in it for themselves.
Good, hopefully spez will get what’s coming to him. He really ran the site into the ground.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some lesser known (so no Walmart, Nestle, Amazon etc) shitty, ethically bankrupt, evil companies?English
7·9 months agoPharmaceutical company Bayer. Sold HIV infected blood to poorer countries because they didn’t want to lose the investment they had in the blood.
Basically the blood was tested, found out it was HIV contaminated, went to a part of the world where they didn’t test as well. Messed with the results of the tests, and infected thousands of people with it, and eventually AIDS. All because the financial loss they would have taken from destroying the blood was considered too much.
Fudge, formatting fooled me! Since 1-4 were numbers and the 5th didn’t have to be a number but just “Bag”, when I wrote it without a number it didn’t start on the next line, but at the end of “4”. Edited the comment to show it better.
The 4th is a bin, and the last one (5th for clarity) is a big plastic bag.
We sort trash in 4 bins and one bag.
- Paper
- Glass and metal
- Bio, food waste
- General waste that doesn’t belong in the other bins.
- Isn’t a bin but a plastic bag for plastic.
Lets say we didn’t have a bag specifically for plastic, that waste would have ended up in 4. Most of 4 is burned. By putting plastic in its own bag it increased the amount of plastic returned to waste management and reduced the amount left out in nature and burned.
We’ve been dealt a shit hand, but we can try making the best out of the situation. Giving up isn’t an option.
It’s like asking if you think a calculator is smarter than you.

It hits the road in America. And considering the state of that country, this isn’t even near the list of problems atm.
