TL:DW It’s a 54:20 video of Fake Linus interviewing with Linus Torvalds. It goes over Linus’s views on hardware choice, questions about Linux and several community questions.

The video is long, but it’s a good listen.

God damn the LTT hate is huge in this channel. I don’t really get it, but shit you guys really don’t like a tech review channel.

When I posted this, there wasn’t a single comment about the actual interview with Linus Torvalds. That’s a crazy amount of vitriol.

Something gets popular, people have to demonstrate how unique and sparkly they are by going against it, it’s a tale as old as time. I watch their videos occasionally and understand he’s neither demon nor god. But try listening to their WAN Show podcast and tell me he’s not (mostly) genuine and open…

I don’t hate LTT but they are mostly an entertainment channel nowadays, not a review channel.

Their reviews are focused on sponsored products, sometimes wrong and most of the time don’t go into much depth. Not to mention the countless ads, sponsorships and clickbait.

If somebody likes them, more power to them, but I don’t go to LTT when I need information about something.

No kidding, it’s intense. I like the channel well enough, and find they’ve handled their various scandals to my satisfaction, at least. And yes, it’s 100% more entertainment than deep technical content I’m gonna learn from, but whatever, guilty pleasures aren’t some horrible sin, and it’s a better use of my time than reality TV. Being such a large channel does also get them access to some really worthwhile stuff now and again, like major factory tours, or Linus Torvalds, and that is stuff that’s really worth my time.

All of that said, I assume there’s lots of people here like myself, but it just ain’t worth jumping out of the woodwork for the guy. I like him, but not nearly enough to cast myself against this much vitriol for his sake.

This is the coolest video they’ve done in ages, and Linus Torvalds seems like such an excellent, genuine guy. He gives really thoughtful answers to even some of the silly joke questions, and it’s great. I super appreciate his perspective, and he interviews excellently.

The channel has no technical depth and has had one too many controversies to be considered valid. It’s a way for large companies to “give” the newest most expensive shit to have it featured for viewers to see and want to buy the newest most expensive shit. He is a sales person.

He spent a lot of years shitting on Linux on his channel before he pulled his head out of his ass and got halfway conciliatory about it. The few times he tried Linux it seemed like the entire show was designed to fail using linux to push people away. And considering how mercenary he has been throughout the years, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was paid to do that.

LTT was a big supporting factor for why I degoogled and switched to Linux when I did. It was partially because of their work I jumped over to self-hosting, open source, or other less “evil corpo” apps.

I’m not really interested in defending the channel or the guy, especially in areas so polluted with hate for the guy, but there’s no way they were paid by Microsoft to slander Linux and tbh I never took their Linux videos as overly critical or completely thorough examinations of the Linux experience. Idk, just feels like over exaggeration on the part of people who have too much fear a bit of non-perfect coverage will hurt their darling product.

Which is totally valid… And also the entire point of my comment. This video had Linus Torvalds in it, giving a pretty decent interview, while building a Linux PC and this thread was nothing but hate. Literally no appreciation for the positive impact LTT was having in a community that, at least on paper, should be over the moon.

I don’t see much Torvalds stuff on camera, so this was nice. I’m not asking people to like LTT, it’s just the dialogue around them on reddit and Lemmy feels extremely immature and outspoken and in this instance felt detrimental to the space and the supposedly shared hobby.

Yes, and I appreciate that you pressed the issue because I never heard what ultimately transpired, since I never really cared for the channel before that. But I see they hired a 3rd party to investigate and the conclusion was that none of the allegations were substantiated. Though I haven’t found any mention of a further response from the employee that made the allegations.

You know, I was fine with LTT for a while (many years ago). I knew they were clowns, but they seemed genuine and well intentioned. Their first Linux challenge made me raise my eyebrows at them, because I was a long time Linux user and knew much of what they said was either off the mark or disingenuous.

Then their storage server video came out and I almost fell off my chair with the levels of bafoonery I had watched. Even the real experts that helped them out had a hard time keeping their words civil while discussing the postmortem of the situation. That’s when I lost respect for LTT and Linus Sebastian as a tech “expert”.

Then all the other stuff about the lies, the made up metrics, the years of garbage test data from negligent and lazy practices, and the cherry on top which was the Billet Labs thing. The arrogance of Linus Sebastian to do the test in bad faith on a GPU that was explicitly stated by Billet Labs to not be the target device, and then Linus whine on the WAAAH Show that it would cost him too much money to do a proper retest, and then just selling off the prototype. Then doubling down twice in a forum post that LINUS SEBASTIAN is somehow the victim in all of this! Poor Poor Linus Sebastian.

And the moron couldn’t even do an apology video without making some wise-ass joke. Couldn’t read the room the one time he needed to do it.

        He’s just an ass-hat.

And 8 months later the results of the investigation were posted here:

                  https://xcancel.com/LinusTech/status/1793428629378208057

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest employment and labour law firms in Western Canada.” They work with both private and public sector employers.

To ensure a fair investigation, LMG did not comment or publicly release any data and asked our team members to do the same. Now that the investigation is complete, we’re able to provide a summary of the findings.

                  The investigation found that:

                  • Claims of bullying and harassment were not substantiated.

                  • Allegations that sexual harassment were ignored or not addressed were false.

                  • Any concerns that were raised were investigated. Furthermore, from reviewing our history, the investigator is confident that if any other concerns had been raised, we would have investigated them.

                  • There was no evidence of “abuse of power” or retaliation. The individual involved may not have agreed with our decisions or performance feedback, but our actions were for legitimate work-related purposes, and our business reasons were valid.

                  • Allegations of process errors and miscommunication while onboarding this individual were partially substantiated, but the investigator found ample documentary evidence of LMG working to rectify the errors and the individual being treated generously and respectfully. When they had questions, they were responded to and addressed.

In summary, as confirmed by the investigation, the allegations made against the team were largely unfounded, misleading, and unfair.

With all of that said, in the spirit of ongoing improvement, the investigator shared their general recommendation that fast-growing workplaces should invest in continuing professional development. The investigator encouraged us to provide further training to our team about how to raise concerns to reinforce our existing workplace policies.

Prior to receiving this report, LMG solicited anonymous feedback from the team in an effort to ensure there was no unreported bullying and harassment and hosted a training session which reiterated our workplace policies and reinforced our reporting structure. LMG will continue to assess ongoing continuing education for our team.

At this time, we feel our case for a defamation suit would be very strong; however, our deepest wish is to simply put all of this behind us. We hope that will be the case, given the investigator’s clear findings that the allegations made online were misrepresentations of what actually occurred. We will continue to assess if there is persistent reputational damage or further defamation.

This doesn’t mean our company is perfect and our journey is over. We are continuously learning and trying to do better. Thank you all for being part of our community.

if his employees felt like they needed to form a union, then he would have failed as an employer

This is a standard anti-union line. It aims to maintain a union-free status quo. Employees in a non-coop union-free workplace have very little leverage to get more of the profits they generate. The workplace environment might be alright, employees might be paid alright. That doesn’t mean they’re paid fairly for the value they create. When there’s no union, employee pay is set by the labour market, regardless of how much value they create for the employer. If an employee creates 10x what they’re paid and they ask for triple pay, their employer would say there’s another candidate to take their place, that it would be a bit of hassle to train so they’d give the employee some marginal raise, to not deal with that. A union on the other hand creates the negotiating leverage to get much more of the value employees create, by threatening a significant financial and reputational loss for the employer. Linua doesn’t want that. Most employers don’t.

You realize that most of us here have watched plenty of LTT content, right?

I don’t know if you would call it a regular occurrence, but on more than a few videos I’ve watched he has made explicitly anti-union comments, including saying that organized labor is unnecessary.

And looking at your comment history, you’re an avid LTT viewer, so you already knew that.

Burden of proof is on the accuser.

I can’t prove a negative, but he has stated multiple times that he is pro union.

Additionally, the 3rd party law firm that investigated the ex employee’s claims against LMG (the company) found that:

Claims of bullying and harassment were not substantiated.

Allegations that sexual harassment were ignored or not addressed were false.

You should also note that the former employee never accused Linus Sebastian (the individual) of being a sex pest. Certain people lie about this constantly on the internet, and others believe it is true without verifying the facts

The burden of proof is on the party making a positive claim. This is true when in a debate, or maybe a professional setting.

But this is the internet. No one owes you anything here, besides, Linus Sebastian’s statements are generally known. And often he directly contradicts himself from show to show.

I think the most interesting bit was his stance on ECC memory. Basically he says everyone should be using it.

Blame Intel for making that a bold statement. Their refusal to allow ECC on anything except expensive server SKUs for decades set data integrity back substantially.

        Fuck Intel.

As a devil’s advocate; what if they allowed ECC by default and manufacturers became overly reliant on it to make certain RAM chips binnable that never should have been?

I can’t say I follow you. The price difference between ecc and nonecc should be so low as to make nonecc extinct, in a world where the marketing shits at Intel didn’t have their way. How would it end up being a negative?

ECC ram. Hardware stability was the main factor.

Real Linus mentions spending days hunting an instability bug in the kernel to have it turn out as bad ram on his pc.

The Intel Battlemage is an interesting choice. I’d put one in non-gaming PC if the price was right, but what is his reasoning? I have alchemist cards that have been running 8 hours a day on QA PCs perfectly fine for 2+ years. They sucked for the first couple months until Intel significantly improved the drivers.

          Sound.

He isn’t gaming, so he didn’t need a powerfull gaming card that can get noicy.

He just needed something that can drive his two monitors (think they were 8k), and be silent.

That’s such a weird build, why have that PSU? That build doesn’t get even close to requiring 1600W, the CPU + GPU are at around 550W together

Sounds like the type of builds I use to do. Generally looking for most bang for the buck so the power supply was more than necessary. Handy when upgrading unless a new socket comes out (ugh).

Torvalds likes his computer quiet so that psu with so much overhead, the fan probably won’t ever turn on.

It’s a perfect build because it validates my personal choice to almost always use Fractal Design cases.

Previously I was primarily going off of vibes, but those have now been upgraded to objective truths.

Worth stating that this video was much more about the interview, rather than giving hardware recommendations.

Why does any even watch Linus Tech Tips, it feels like most his facts are based on his opinion, rather than any grounded reality, while he will flaunts it as fact. Then goes and make noob mistakes with his setups, while acting like computer Jesus. A fake interview only perpetuates this state of him making up content, to what ever pleases his himself and his patron audience. Truth only gets in the way of a good story, and this guy seems to know how to spin the tallest of stories

It’s an interview you hate-watch because you don’t like the interviewer. Completely reasonable…
