It is an unforgiving part. I have personally seen multiple people get sucked into this part and torn to shreds because the person in front of them stopped to extend the telescopic handle of their suitcase right after stepping off the escalator. They had nowhere to run. I can still hear their screams.
… its not that scary… it just sucks when people get to off ethe escalator and just- stand right at the end, thinking about where to go next.
My dog can handle those. And she can handle almost nothing the world throws at her.

I’m more scared of the area right after you get off, as that’s where the belt and the gears that could actually crush you are housed.
I can confirm it is absolutely terrifying if you cannot see it. I do not under any circumstances recommend trying to get on one while in a fursuit head. Especially one like mine. Giant walking blind spot and cannot see where I am even walking. Not fun.
Its called the comb plate, and they have pressure switches that will trigger the emergency stop if something gets stuck.
I fell once as a child. My hair got stuck and they had to cut it off.
