Try to have the company run for a week without the janitor and 1 week without the CEO, and everybody would tell you who’s doing the most important job.
Know you meant this as rhetorical, but I can speak from my own experience.
Our janitor went on leave for a week without replacement, I can sure tell you I missed them by the end of that week.
Meanwhile in an old SME job, our CEO left for an entire fortnight to some corporate BS, and genuinely the only tell was the managers being more friendly and relaxed.
I think it would be difficult to do it in good faith because the CEOs can subtlely fuck with the results on both ends. Like order other non-janitors to pick up some of the more urgent cleaning/maintenance work to make them seem less important (or maybe offer secret bonuses to people to “just clean up because they like to be helpful” or something). Also order their own subordinates to do crazy (but reversible) things while the CEO is away.
The same thing I’d expect them to do for experiments with alternate economic systems, sabotage the shit out of it so they can say “see, this won’t work!”
Janitor works quietly in the background making the world around them slightly better whilst getting paid about as little as legally possible.
CEOs loudly ruin the world around them whilst making more than 100x what the janitor makes (and that’s just their salary)
I certainly know who I’d want rid of.
