I used to do location scouting for films, I was surprised at how many people let me into their house and poke around just from knocking on their door with a clipboard of location agreements.
Also, unless they’re going to pay you a lot, don’t agree to be a film set, even the best crews scuff floors and dent walls. Shoot days are a frenzy when you’re trying to jam stuff into the least amount of days feasible
Man, I was the stand-in/double for Martin Starr during the first season of Tulsa King and we filmed one day at some fancy ass house in OKC that was his characters house in the show, and as I’m sure you know, we couldn’t run the house AC or anything like that, and it was hot as fuck that day.
This ladies house smelled, and I mean REEKED of cat piss so bad that even the most seasoned of us were struggling to breathe in that place. I think we were there for about 10 hours and as the stand-in I was of course sitting in position for hours at a time while we got the shots setup and holy fuck it was torture. I remember when we were finally ready for 1st team I told Martin, “I hope you know your lines bro, because you aren’t going to want to fuck this up” lol.
I don’t know what she got paid for us using the house, but she should’ve been paying us. They brought in portable AC units to try to help while lighting and shit was setup but it didn’t help. At all. I’ll never forget that day and neither will any of my 2nd team cohorts lol. How she didn’t realize the stink was beyond me. Nose blind is one thing but this place was physically assaulting.
Edit - anyway, my point was her house got seriously fucked up because everyone was rushing to get equipment setup and the flimsy paper taped everywhere didn’t do shit to stop the damage we caused lol
as I’m sure you know, we couldn’t run the house AC or anything like that
No, I don’t know. Why couldn’t you run the AC?! Especially if you’re just setting up shots and not filming?
That’s a fair question… You can’t use their air conditioning and such because for one, we spend a ton of time getting sound levels setup correctly and noise must be kept to a minimum. Aside from that, when you have a hundred people going in and out of a house for hours and hours, stirring up dust and all manner of shit, you could easily burn up the homeowners unit, costing untold amounts of money on top of the already expensive shoot. It’s just too much liability. This is why they bring huge portable units ran through open windows. The house AC would basically run non-stop the entire time in what was 100+ degree weather, which will easily fuck up a consumer AC unit. There’s more to it I’m sure, but I was merely a sweat sacrifice for the main actor during setup, but I have no doubt the liabilities involved in onsite shoots is enormous.
Edit - also, we are filming and rehearsing the whole time. It takes a considerable amount of time and effort to make high quality media.
I peek through a lot of windows each week. You guys would be surprised how many people just sleep in their bed. That’s it. That’s their life.
Ever knock to see if they are even alive?
You aren’t curious as to why they peek through a lot of windows each week?
I think that part is self-explanatory. He’s just doing community service and checking on his neighbors welfare. While he jerks off.
Bro burgles houses for a living.
It would suck for him if all his victims were at home waiting for him
Not if he moonlights as a serial killer
I don’t know how much money there is in serial killing… that would probably be more of a hobby.
Job and hobby at the same time? In this economy?
Sitting? In the sitting room? Disgusting
I hear there are places where standing rooms are all they have
People always be breathing
“These people definitely wouldn’t be doing anything differently if I wasn’t here” uh huh
Beyond that…
It’s your life, do whatever makes you feel comfortable. If taking quiet time and just sitting and thinking in your home is good enough for you, fuck the haters, keep doing what you’re doing.
With serve ADHD, I sometimes need a day to just sit with my eyes closed, limiting stimulus as much as possible, to recover from battery drainage. I don’t sleep, but it is a kind of rest.
I mean sure… But if a lot of people truly don’t have the energy to do anything in their free time besides idle that is kinda alarming
And what if that includes being a degenerate and playing a game nonstop for four days straight? Asking for a friend.
Completely fine. Unless that game is League of Legends in which case you are pretty much beyond help.
Dont worry i dont play league of legends. I mean, my friend doesnt. Its still not good though, i took a four day weekend for the release of wow forever
I took the two days after release and the entire week following. Don’t feel bad.
Im jealous. I would have if i couldve
As a general rule, time enjoyed is not time wasted. You know, as long as you aren’t harming anyone. We shouldn’t be wracked with guilt for enjoying what little free time most of us have.
As long as you’re practicing decent hygiene and keeping the place reasonably tidy then fuck it, sounds like a killer long weekend.
I already perfected hygiene awhile ago. Hardly practice it at all anymore.
I mean, it depends. If it’s just you have the time off and that’s how you intend to use it there’s no judgment there. However, if it comes from a place of depression and using the game as a dopamine escape hatch, that’s not necessarily a good way to handle the depression, but it’s still ultimately your choice what to do with your life. Even then, that’s not judgment worthy as much as worthy of concern for your friend who may not be doing well.
I mean what else do you expect me to do, the only reason I even have pants on is because a stranger is in my apt doing something.
That’s very considerate to put on underwear for your murderer.
He never mentioned underwear. For all we know, the only thing between them and us is a thin layer of gabardine.
Well I have to do something to make my hair look fancy
I never know what to do with myself when I schedule something at my home, and my social anxiety makes me worried that I’m always going to be judged like this. I don’t have any work because I took the day off for this service. Do I just fuck off and continue gaming while the person is working?
I usually sit right there with them, watching and talking. I’ve found most people who work in trades love to explain what they’re doing, and it’s like a free class. Actually, more like a class you pay a lot for. Anyway, occasionally I’ve had someone who obviously isn’t interested in talking, but the overwhelming majority are totally down.
Basically, yeah. Your taking the day off for them to be there is the reason you don’t have work, which you otherwise would. People who perform that kind of work aren’t likely to judge you, since people being in their homes when workers show up is about as common as tap water. If someone does decide to judge you for that, then it speaks more about their lack of reason than however lazy you might think you appear to be to them.
I used to think this way until I considered how they felt. It’s really stressful to have someone breathing down your neck while you work, so I usually just show them where the work area is and answer any questions they have then tell them where I’ll be if they need something.
On the flip side, the only time I’ve judged someone in this situation is a girl who had been sleeping before we came by for maintenance, didn’t answer the door so we let ourselves in (notice given in advance) and she was in the bedroom still half asleep and just awake enough to tell us which rooms were getting worked on for turn. She was literally crawling back into bed and covering herself in a blanket while speaking to us. Wasn’t harsh judgment or anything, more of a “that was a weird interaction.”
I typically just sit on my phone while they work, and possibly chat with them if they feel like chatting
Idk, gaming on my computer feels like “too much”, if that makes sense, but that may just be because of negative associations from when people watched me sit on the PC in the past. Being on your phone feels more socially acceptable and you don’t get so “lock in” if that makes sense
That said, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to be om your computer yeah
I usually do that just without my headphones on. Its very stressful for me too
We are always watching. Judging.
I retired at 38 years old (20 years of military service, plus 100% disability got me there) and I pretty much just sit around my house all day now.
I spent 2 decades traveling the world and experiencing an extremely busy, productive life. Now I just wanna sit in my quiet, countryside home and enjoy some peace.
It’s not that I can’t get up and out of the house; I’m not that kind of disabled. I just enjoy focusing on myself for once. Investing in my own hobbies, not being at the beck and call of someone else. No deadlines, no alarms every morning, not worrying about making rent this month or feeding myself. It’s wonderful.
Bruh, retiring that early?
bruh did you even clock bro’s comment? bro was high key grindmaxxing af for like twenty years bruh, bro just wants to enable chill mode and not have to lock in and shit and I’m just like fax bro. bffr
Did you miss the disability part? Leave them in peace if that’s what they want.
20 years of military service (plus full disability) gets you a decent pension. Pretty much the only way an American can get a pension anymore.
There are lots of government jobs with pensions. Plenty cities and counties here in Texas have great pension plans. My sister works for a county library system and will be able retire at 48
There’s minimum retirement age to begin drawing the pension and there’s being able to afford it. Usually drawing at the minimum age you can leads to a smaller pension.
I worked briefly for the Parks Service. Theoretically I could have retired 57 if I stayed in, but the math became more favorable at my salary if I stayed in until I was 60 to 62. Which is still better than average, but not quite as amazing as it looks on paper
There are definitely formalae related to tenure and age. My sister will have put in 25 years with the county library system when she’s 48, which is how that math works. I know a guy who retired from the city government where I live a couple years ago at 53 and draws that pension. He went back a year later at a lower level position with little responsibility and earns that salary now in addition to his pension
Wouldn’t you if you could?
If I could retire now while I’m still able and clear headed I fucking would in a heartbeat.
